Welcome to the Alumatec resource page. Below, we’ve answered the most common questions about our security grilles and shutters to help you choose the right solution for your project
What is the main difference between a rolling shutter and a rolling grille?
Rolling shutters feature solid or perforated slats that provide a complete visual and physical barrier, making them ideal for high-security storefronts or weather protection. Rolling grilles use an open-curtain design (links and rods) that provides security while allowing for full visibility and airflow, commonly used in shopping malls and parking garages.
Can these doors be motorized, or are they manual?
We offer both options. Small shutters can be easily operated with a manual crank or push-up/pull-down spring system. For larger industrial or commercial applications, we recommend high-efficiency tube motors or side-mount motor operators for ease of use and safety.
What materials are used in Alumatec grilles?
Our products are primarily constructed from high-strength extruded aluminum. Aluminum offers a superior strength-to-weight ratio compared to steel and is naturally resistant to rust and corrosion, which is vital for both coastal and industrial environments.
How much headroom is required for an overhead rolling door?
Headroom requirements vary based on the height of the opening. Because the curtain rolls into a compact coil at the top, typically 12 to 24 inches of clearance is needed. We can provide specific shop drawings based on your exact opening dimensions.
How often should rolling shutters be serviced?
For commercial settings, we recommend a professional inspection at least once a year. Regular maintenance includes checking the alignment, lubricating the guides, and ensuring the motor limits and safety sensors are functioning correctly.
Are these grilles “emergency-exit” compliant?
Yes, we can equip our grilles with emergency release devices or “egress” handles that allow the door to be opened manually from the inside in the event of a power failure or fire, meeting most local building codes.
How do rolling shutters help with energy efficiency?
Solid rolling shutters provide an extra layer of insulation. By creating an air gap between the shutter and the window or door, they reduce thermal transfer, helping to keep interiors cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
